A David vs Goliath story has been unfolding over the last few months where one lucky punter with a connection to the Punters Show is sweating on Fame Game winning the Melbourne Cup to round out a four-leg multi worth $468,000.
This punter known as "Langy" to his mates and has been toiling away on his Sportsbet account for many years now. More times than not being on the wrong side of the ledger!
However "Langy" is not a complete mug! He (like most of us) likes to play a few feature race multi's to go for that jackpot result every spring. So he asked some of his mates on the 22nd of September for some educated opinions and here's what they came up with:
$100 Multi Bet - 4 Legs @ $468 to collect $468,000
The first leg was 11 days away from when he placed the bet in question. It was the Epsom / Metropolitan Day on the 3rd of October.
Leg 1- Winx to win the Epsom $4
"The race dropped away and her first-up performance in the Theo Marks was jaw dropping. She only needed clear running to win. They told me she was a star miler and had improved off the short break. Right they were."
Leg 2 - Magic Hurricane to with The Metropolitan $5
"Lined up in the Metropolitan off a huge run in the Hill Stakes when 21 days between runs. That run topped him off nicely and then the drop of 3.5kg from WFA to HCP made him close to a good thing if he could run a strong 2400m. He did."
Langy then had to wait two weeks for the next bet.
Leg 3 - Mongolian Khan to win the Caulfield Cup $26
"He was already a dual Derby winner and with the depth in the Cox Plate he wasn't quite suited to 2000m. He looked well in with 55kg in the Caulfield Cup and presumed he would back up well from the Caulfield Stakes."
Leg 4 - Fame Game to win the Melbourne Cup $9
"Here's where the Punters Show connection comes into play. A mate of mine who helped me with the above three legs knows Matt from the Punters Show. I was told Matt had just had an in-depth look at The Melbourne Cup and was all wrapped up in Fame Game after watching his Tenno Show run. My mate confirmed that was the right race to take a Japanese runner from so in it went."
"My mate was bullish that Alpine Eagle would win the Cox Plate so I had the exact same multi with Apline Eagle in the Cox Plate and left Fame Game out of that one. Onviously that ticket went down the drain once Alpine Eagle was ruled out for the spring.
Here's the ticket!
So what's Langy doing now?
"After Mongolian Khan took out the Caulfield Cup I was shaking. The "whacker" I use when I watch my races copped a good belting. I thought Opie Bosson could have been a touch more aggressive with the persuader like I was, but I'll forgive him now."
"At first the cash out offer I was likely to be offered was somewhere in the ball park of $70,000. But at no point in time did I think that was great value."
So what are you going to do Langy?
"I'm going to let it ride!
"It's all or nothing for me. It's a once in a lifetime situation. All my mates are suggesting laying off some, finding a few other runners but at this stage I'm letting it ride." Langy said.
One of his mates described not laying off as "sheer madness" but Langy doesn't see it that way! Whatever the result, lets cheer on the mighty Fame Game for this David vs Goliath battle and let's really hope there is a small sling for Matt!
So what if Fame Game wins?
"STRAIGHT TO THE MONDRIAN, LA BABY (pictured) ! And I'll be taking some of the boys along too" Langy said.
If Fame Game does happen to with the only thing I can sat is #PrayForLangy. And pray for the good folk of LA.
