McLeod: Tattersall's Mile a race to the bottom

IT is the feature race on Saturday’s Doomben card but the Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) looks a race to the bottom according to Brisbane expert John McLeod.

The market for the race is headed by Flamboyer ($4.20), which is presented for this event three weeks after taking out the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast.

But McLeod believes question marks over his credentials at the 1600m trip make him a false favourite for this event.

“This is a pretty strange race,” McLeod said.

“The favourite Flamboyer has had a couple of goes at the mile a while ago and I don’t think it will get the 1600m tomorrow.

“With a bit of pressure from Perfect Punch ($81) – which will have the blinkers on and Tegan Harrison riding – he could be vulnerable the last little bit.

But despite identifying flaws in the favourite, McLeod admitted he struggled to find too much else to be excited about in the race.

“There are horses like Hi Son ($13) which has been going around and around and is hard to catch,” he said.

“Jetset Lad ($34) is coming back from 2400m and I couldn’t have him either.

“Steel Zip ($12) is also stepping up to this trip again but from barrier 10 I couldn’t see him getting the mile either.”

But McLeod did concede that the track itself would have little impact on the running of the race, with the one-metre rail position expected to produce a fair surface.

“The weather is glorious here. The track should dry out back to a Good 4,” he said.

“The one metre rail position is fairly even for all and the races will likely be decided more by the pace than a bias.”
