Market movers: Hawkes colt smashed at Caulfield

WHEN a Hawkes-trained runner produces a brilliant trial, you simply have to take notice.

That’s exactly what punters have done, ploughing into the resuming Crafty Cop in Race Three (Two-Years-Old Handicap, 1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Many experts are quick to point out how deceptive blistering trial performances can be, but few have had little hesitation taking the best early prices about this colt.

After a strong debut win at Warwick Farm in March over 1100m, Crafty Cop stepped up to 1400m and ran third in the Group 3 Ballieu Handicap, before being tipped out for a spell.

The form from that race was franked by the second-placed Prized Icon, which went on to win the (albeit weak) Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m).

Crafty Cop’s subsequent trial victory over Defcon proved he had returned in fine order and from barrier four he looks to have the conditions to suit on his return to racing this Saturday.

But the two-year-old isn’t the only runner to be well backed in early markets for Saturday’s racing.

Below are the major market movers for racing at Caulfield, Doomben and Rosehill Gardens.
